If you have an RV, you probably want to make sure that you have a decent supply of hot water for showering and washing dishes. Not having hot water can be miserable. As a result, you will want to take steps to make sure that you are fully maintaining your hot water heater. Here are some tips for doing so.

1. Drain Your Tank Regularly

Be sure that you are taking the time to drain the hot water tank regularly. This will allow you to manually remove any residue or other buildup that you might have on the walls of your hot water tank that could cause the water to smell or taste unpleasant. You don't know how clean the water at various campsites is. It could cause the buildup in your tank to accelerate. This will also give you a chance to look at the anode of your water tank. This is the part of the tank that is going to erode, rather than the tank liner itself. This is because the anode is more susceptible to rust and other erosion. Check the anode for damage and replace it if necessary. Try to drain your tank once a year if you don't live in your RV full time and a few times a year if you do live in it full time.

2. Look for Debris

The next worst thing, after not having hot water, is to have hot water that comes out of your tap at a trickle. You might have cold water coming out at a full blast, but your hot water just isn't cutting it. This could be a result of debris clogging your tank. This could be calcium deposits or other unwanted particles. Check both your anode and the tank itself to make sure that nothing is blocking the pipes that take the hot water to your sink.

3. Check for Leaks

Finally, make sure that you are regularly checking for leaks that could damage your RV or make your life a little less convenient. This is usually due to a valve that is not sealing properly and will need to be replaced. Checking regularly will make it easy for you to get the valve replaced in a timely manner.
